5 ways to save money on Christmas shopping

As the weather gets just a bit cooler each day, we get more and more excited about Christmas. There are a lot of wonderful things we associate Christmas with, and one of those is most definitely the part where we get to give our family and our loved ones the perfect presents they deserve. We all enjoy the gift giving part the most, but what we rarely think about is how we can save money on Christmas shopping, so we don’t have to start the new year broke.

Although all we want to do is buy our friends and family gifts they would love and cherish, we often end up spending a lot more money than we actually planned. The point of Christmas isn’t that. What’s important is to have a lovely and wonderful time with our loved ones, and spread the love and joy all around.

You won’t need to spend a fortune to do this. Just follow our advice and you’ll go much easier on your wallet this year.

Start saving

November is just around the corner, which means that in a few weeks or so you might want to start putting aside some money for the Christmas season to come. You can start saving up not just for Christmas presents, but for new decorations, food and drinks, and of course you might also want to do some Christmas travelling as well. If you want to have money for all that, you need to start saving a bit sooner. You can do this by spending a little less on nights out, shopping, or dining, which means that now’s definitely not the time to try some of these foods.

Make a budget

Creating a budget for Christmas will help you limit, and even reduce your spending by a lot. You can make a list of all the people you want to buy gifts for, and set a limit of the amount of dollars you’re going to spend on their gift. Use that list as a guideline when you actually do your shopping. The list will be there to keep you from going overboard, and spending more than you can afford to.

Try using the “Secret Santa” gift exchange

You won’t just save money, but you’ll also be having fun while doing so. If you’ve never tried Secret Santa, here’s how you do it:

-Each of you will have to write your name on a piece of paper and put it in a hat.
-After that you’ll each pull out a name, and you’ll be that person’s Secret Santa, which means you’ll have to buy him or her a gift, without them knowing it was you.

You can even initiate a charitable Secret Santa with all your neighbors, and instead of buying presents for your family members, all of you could go and buy something for a family in need, so that they too can have a nice and happy Christmas of their own.

Buy discounted gift cards

You can buy discounted gift cards which you can use at your favorite store, as well as for online shopping.

One more thing you can do is to not use your gift card right away. Wait for them to have coupons or a big sale in the store. The same goes for online shopping as well.

Always know when to stop

save money on Christmas shopping - when to stop shoppingAs soon as you’ve checked out everything on your list, you can be sure that you’ve got everything you needed and it’s time to stop shopping. Now that you’re done with this year’s Christmas shopping, you’ll need to try to avoid temptation as much as possible. This means that you’ll have to walk by the big “sale” signs. You’ll be lying to yourself, if you think that you can go inside just to see what they have – this often leads to unplanned purchases that you might not even have the need for.
